Presidential CNG Initiative
Figures below refer to 31 January 2026 unless stated otherwise.
The claim
The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative is the administration's most granularly documented programme, published in an official term report covering May 2023 to January 2026.
Figures
93,845 conversion kits deployed against a 120,000 target. 655 CNG buses, 5,123 CNG tricycles and 40 electric buses deployed. 90 refuelling stations operational across 23 states against a target of 100. Over 337 conversion centres, representing a roughly 3,000% increase in conversion capacity. Over $2bn total investment secured, including over $491m private AutoCNG investment, and ₦250bn facilitated in the CNG value chain. Over 10,000 jobs and 7,700 auto-technicians trained. 405 CNG buses delivered to the NLC and TUC.
The counter-argument
It missed both headline targets — 93,845 kits against 120,000, and 90 stations against 100 — and petrol prices rose 55% year on year by May 2026 anyway. The honest frame is that the substitution is real but slower than the pain it was meant to offset.
