False claim

any inflation comparison spanning January 2025

Figures below refer to 16 August 2026 unless stated otherwise.

This is a false or unverifiable claim. It circulates widely. The assistant will warn against it rather than repeat it, even if asked to confirm it.

The claim

The NBS rebased the CPI basket from 2009 to 2024 in January 2025, cutting the headline from 34.80% to 24.48% overnight with no change in prices. NBS never published a parallel old series. Comparing a pre-January-2025 rate with a post-January-2025 rate is invalid and economists will say so.

Figures

December 2024: 34.80% (old basket). January 2025: 24.48% (new basket). The 10-point drop is a measurement change, not disinflation.

Why it fails

Saying 'inflation fell from 34.8% to 15.9% under this administration' is the single most common false claim in pro-administration content.
